SSA offers a series of R9 level (entry course for U15 and below SSA players) and R8 (entry course for U16 and above SSA players or adults) courses on a seasonal basis for current SSA members interested in becoming referees, as well as upgrade courses for existing referees.

Entry Level (R9) Course:

The students are taught all of the Laws of the Game at a level appropriate for beginning referees officiating youth soccer at younger age groups. There is an online study session and a seven-hour Saturday session in the classroom and on the field, and a final exam. 
A Referee Grade 9 is a Recreational Referee. Once certified, you will be able to be a Center Referee for Recreational Games only, U-12 and younger. You will be able to run lines (Assistant Referee) for all levels (including Academy and Select), U-14 and younger.

Cost
The total cost is $90, which breaks out as $50 for the class and $40 for registration with the United States Soccer Federation.


Recertification Courses:

SSA is also offering upgrade courses for current R9 referees to the R8 level:

The Bridge Course has three parts. The first is online learning, which is a review of the Laws of the Game. The second is an online test, which you can take with or without a copy of the LOTG. It is almost entirely on the restarts -- what is the restart after play is stopped and when is the ball in play at each restart. The third session is a full day in the classroom and on the field and will concentrate on the methods by which you apply the LOTG. It is followed by a final exam.
